Every serpentine belt carries its own spec in its part number — rib count and length, in two competing systems. Here is how to read both, how to convert between them, and how to work out what you need when the old belt is in pieces on the shoulder.
The number is the spec, not a catalog code
A serpentine belt part number is not arbitrary. Unlike most truck parts, where the number is just an index into somebody's catalog, a belt number tells you the two dimensions that decide fitment: how many ribs it has and how long it is. Learn to read it and you can identify a belt from a photograph, or work out what you need from a bare pulley layout.
There are two systems in circulation, and most heavy-duty listings carry both. That is why our own listings look redundant at first glance: the same belt shows as GT4080510 and as 8PK1295. Those are not two parts. They are the same belt written twice.
Metric: 8PK1295 means 8 ribs, 1295 millimetres
The metric form is the one most people meet first. Split it at the letters. The digits in front are the rib count, PK is the section profile, and the digits after are the effective length in millimetres.
So 8PK1295 is an 8-rib belt, 1295 mm long, which is 51.0 inches. A 12PK1625 is a 12-rib belt at 1625 mm, or 64.0 inches. The PK section itself has fixed dimensions — the ribs sit on a 3.56 mm pitch, and a heavy-duty 8-rib belt runs about 1.09 inches across the top.
Divide the millimetre figure by 25.4 and you have inches. That single piece of arithmetic is what lets you cross between the two systems, which is the next part.
Imperial: 4080510 and K080510 mean 8 ribs, 51.0 inches
Gates, Dayco and the numbers that come off American parts counters use inches instead. The form looks like K080510 or 4080510, and it splits the same way: the first pair of digits is the rib count, and the rest is the length in tenths of an inch.
Read 4080510 as 08 ribs and 0510 tenths, which is 51.0 inches. Read GT4080811 as 8 ribs and 81.1 inches. Once you see the break point the numbers stop looking random.
Now put the two together. 1295 mm divided by 25.4 is 51.0 inches, and 4080510 says 51.0 inches with 8 ribs. Same belt, two alphabets. Every cross-reference in the table below was checked that way against our own stock, which is why the numbers line up exactly rather than approximately.

When the old belt is unreadable or gone
A belt that let go on the road takes its printing with it, and a belt that has been on for six years has usually worn the printing off anyway. You can still get the number, and it takes two measurements.
Count the ribs first. Count the grooves on the ribbed face, not the flat back, and count carefully — an 8-rib and a 10-rib belt of similar length look alike in your hands and will not interchange. Rib count is the one dimension with no tolerance at all.
Then get the length. If you have the old belt, lay it flat, run a tape along the ribbed side and take the outside circumference, then subtract about half an inch to approximate effective length. If the belt is gone, run a piece of string around the pulley path with the tensioner at its normal running position, mark it, and measure the string. Round to the nearest listed size — belt lengths come in steps, and the tensioner exists to take up the difference.
- Rib count: exact match, no exceptions
- Length: nearest stocked size, the tensioner absorbs the rest
- Both numbers together identify the belt — neither one alone does
Rib count is fitment, length is adjustment
It is worth being precise about which dimension matters in which way. Rib count has to match the pulleys exactly. Fit an 8-rib belt on a 10-rib pulley set and two ribs run off the edge, which loads the belt unevenly and shreds it. Fit a 10-rib on 8-rib pulleys and the overhang picks up debris and walks the belt.
Length is different. It has to land inside the tensioner's travel, and that travel is typically enough to cover the next size up or down. If your measured length falls between two listed belts, the shorter one usually gives more tensioner reserve for the belt to stretch into over its life. If in doubt, match the number rather than the measurement.
Change the tensioner with the belt
A serpentine belt does not usually fail on its own. It fails because the tensioner behind it stopped doing its job: the spring weakened, the damping went away, or the pulley bearing got noisy and started running the belt off-square. Fitting a new belt to a tired tensioner buys months, not years, and the second failure lands at a worse moment than the first.
The tell is easy to check with the engine off. Push the tensioner arm through its travel by hand. It should move smoothly and return firmly. If it feels notchy, if it flutters when the engine is running, or if the pulley has any play or growl in it, replace them together. A tensioner is a fraction of the cost of the tow that a thrown belt earns you.
