Trailer tail lights are bought by shape and size, not by truck: a 4-inch round, a 6-inch oval and a 6-3/8-inch oval all do the same job and none of them fit each other's hole. Work out what is cut into your panel, then match the function — a plain tail lamp, a stop-turn-tail, or one with a backup lamp built in. Measure the hole, then pick the function

Almost every wrong trailer-light order comes from ordering by picture instead of by dimension. Three sizes cover most of what is on the road, and they are not interchangeable: a 4-inch round, a 6-inch oval and a 6-3/8-inch oval. The oval sizes look close enough in a photograph to fool anyone, and the grommet that suits one will not seal the other.

Measure across the widest part of the cutout in the panel, not across the lens of the old lamp — a surface-mount lamp overhangs its hole, so measuring the lens sends you a size too big. If the old lamp sits in a rubber grommet, pull it and measure the grommet's inner bore.

Then settle the function. A tail lamp glows. A stop-turn-tail does all three from one housing, which is what most trailers run at the rear corners. Some units add a backup lamp, and some pair with a licence-plate bracket. Buy the function your wiring already supplies: a three-wire lamp on a two-wire circuit leaves you a dead function and a puzzle.

Colour is regulated, not decorative

Rear-facing lamps are red and side-facing lamps forward of the rear are amber. That is not a styling convention, it is how the vehicle is required to be lit, and an amber lamp fitted where a red one belongs is a violation an inspector will find in seconds.

The practical version: red at the back, amber down the sides and at the front corners, and a white licence-plate lamp. If you are replacing like for like, match the colour that came out. If you are building a trailer up from bare, work from the placement rules rather than from what looks good.

Buy the spares with the repair

A trailer carries a lot of lamps, and they age together. The one that failed is the first of a set that has all seen the same water, salt and vibration, so the second failure is usually weeks behind the first, not years. Fleets that keep a couple of spare lamps and a spare grommet in the truck stop losing an evening to a burnt-out marker at a scale house.

Sealed LED lamps have no serviceable parts. When one goes, it is replaced, not repaired — which is why the sensible unit of purchase is a few at a time rather than one at a time.

What size trailer tail light do I need?

Measure the cutout in the panel, not the lens. The three common sizes are 4-inch round, 6-inch oval and 6-3/8-inch oval, and they do not interchange — the two oval sizes in particular look almost identical in photographs. If the old lamp sat in a grommet, measure the grommet's inner bore.

What is the difference between a tail light and a stop-turn-tail light?

A tail lamp is a single steady function. A stop-turn-tail combines the running lamp, the brake lamp and the turn signal in one housing, which is what most trailers run at the rear corners. Check how many wires your circuit supplies before ordering — a three-wire lamp needs a three-wire feed.

Can I use an amber lamp at the rear of a trailer?

No. Rear-facing lamps are red; amber belongs on the sides and front corners. Colour and placement are regulated, and the wrong colour in the wrong place is an easy out-of-service finding at an inspection.

Are these lights submersible?

Some are, and the listing says so where it applies. Submersible lamps are the ones to fit on a boat or utility trailer that gets backed into water; a sealed but non-submersible lamp is fine for over-the-road use where it only meets rain and road spray.

Do LED trailer lights need a load resistor?

On a trailer with its own dedicated circuits, usually not. On a tow vehicle whose flasher watches current draw, swapping incandescent lamps for LEDs can cause hyper-flash because the LEDs pull so little — that is where a load resistor or an LED-rated flasher comes in.
