Replacing a Semi Truck Hood: What It Costs and What You Actually Need

First, work out whether the hood is the problem

A hood that will not stay shut, rattles at speed or sits proud on one corner is usually telling you about its hardware, not about itself. The latch spindle wears, the hood lifts a fraction at highway speed, and that flexing is what eventually cracks the corners and the mounting points. Replace the latch early and the hood survives; leave it and you buy the hood.

On a Volvo VN/VNL the latch assembly is 20565618 on the left and 20565619 on the right, $47.99 a side, and the upper latch spindle kit is $39.99. That is the cheapest diagnostic you will ever run on a hood.

The hood genuinely needs replacing when the structure is gone: cracks through the mounting points, delamination around the hinge area, or collision damage that has moved the shut lines. Surface cracks in the gel coat are a body-shop repair, not a new hood.

What a complete hood costs

Both are aftermarket direct replacements that mount on the original hinge and latch points. Neither comes painted — they arrive in primer or raw finish so a body shop can match your colour, and that paint is a real line in the budget when you are comparing against a dealer hood.

The freight is the part people forget

A hood is about 395 lb and physically enormous. It does not go parcel, it goes on a pallet by freight, and what that costs depends on your ZIP, whether there is a loading dock at the delivery point and whether the driver needs a lift gate to get it down. A residential or no-dock delivery can add real money.

We do not bake a guessed freight number into the price, because on an item this size a guess is either a loss for us or an overcharge for you. Send the delivery ZIP and tell us whether you have a dock, and you get the landed number before you commit to anything.

Plan the timing too. A hood is not a same-day part — the hardware on this site ships same business day, a palletised hood does not.

What does not come with the hood

• Paint — assume primer or raw finish, and budget the body shop.
• Grille, trim and badges — ordered separately unless the listing says otherwise.
• Hood mirrors — separate parts, and we stock them for Volvo VNL, Freightliner Cascadia and International LT.
• Latches and spindles — reuse yours only if they are sound; a worn spindle on a new hood repeats the whole failure.

If we do not have your hood

The complete hoods we stock today are the Kenworth T680 and the Volvo VNL, and we would rather say that plainly than let you dig through a catalogue. Hood hardware and hood mirrors cover more trucks than the hoods do.
