Trailer lighting is one of the few areas where the part, the colour and the position are all specified for you. Here is what the federal rule requires, what the measurable numbers are, and where fleets most often get caught out.
Lighting is a placement rule, not a parts rule
Most parts on a truck are specified by what fits. Lighting is specified by where it sits and what colour it shows. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations set out which lamps a commercial trailer must carry, what colour each one is, and roughly where on the vehicle it belongs — so a lamp that is perfectly good in itself becomes a violation the moment it is fitted in the wrong place or the wrong colour.
That is worth knowing before you order, because it changes what you are shopping for. You are not looking for a lamp that fits the hole. You are looking for the lamp that belongs in that position on that vehicle, which then also has to fit the hole.
The governing text is 49 CFR 393.11, and it is worth reading rather than trusting a summary — including this one. What follows is the shape of the requirement and the numbers that come up most, not a substitute for the regulation.
The families of lamp on a trailer
A trailer's lighting divides into a handful of jobs, and it helps to think in those terms rather than in part numbers.
Rear lamps do the signalling: tail, stop and turn, often combined into a single stop-turn-tail housing at each rear corner. Side marker lamps run down the length of the vehicle to show where it is and how long it is. Clearance lamps sit at the widest points to show how wide it is. Identification lamps are the cluster of three across the top rear. And a licence plate lamp lights the plate.
The regulation explicitly permits lamps and reflectors to be combined where the federal motor vehicle safety standard allows it, which is why one housing can legally be your tail, stop and turn lamp at once.
- Tail, stop and turn — rear corners, red
- Side marker — along the length, amber forward and red rearward
- Clearance — at the widest points, showing overall width
- Identification — three lamps across the top rear
- Licence plate lamp — white
- Reflex reflectors — the passive half of the system
The numbers that actually get measured
Two height figures come up more than any others at an inspection. On a semitrailer or full trailer built on or after 1 March 1979, rear side-marker lamps must sit at least 15 inches above the road surface, measured from the centre of the lamp with the vehicle at curb weight. And lamps on the rear of trailers must be no more than 60 inches above the road.
Identification lamps have their own placement rule: they go on the vertical centreline, and no part of the lamp or its mounting may extend below the top of the windshield on a power unit. On a trailer the cluster belongs across the top rear.
These are the figures worth carrying in your head, because they are the ones that get checked with a tape rather than by eye.
Colour is the fastest way to fail
Amber faces forward and to the side ahead of the rear. Red faces rearward. On a long trailer the intermediate side markers change from amber at the front to red at the back, and the change happens around the midpoint of the vehicle.
This is the mistake that costs fleets the most, and it is almost always innocent: somebody had an amber lamp in the truck, the red one at the rear corner had failed, and the amber one fitted the hole. It fits, it lights, and it is wrong. An inspector spots a colour error from twenty feet away without touching the trailer.
The practical rule when replacing: match the colour that came out. The exception is a trailer that has been worked on by somebody creative — then work from the placement rules rather than from what you found.
Where fleets actually get caught
In practice the findings cluster around a few things, and none of them are exotic. A lamp out is the obvious one, and on a trailer with dozens of lamps the odds compound. Water intrusion is the reason most of them are out: a sealed LED that fills with water is finished, and it fills because the grommet went hard, not because the lamp was cheap.
The rest is placement and colour. A lamp moved when a panel was repaired and never put back at the right height. An amber lamp in a red position. A missing intermediate side marker on a long trailer that used to have one. And a licence plate lamp that nobody has thought about in years.
The way out of this is not vigilance, it is spares. A trailer's lamps age as a set, so the first failure is a signal about the rest. A handful of lamps and grommets in the truck turns a marker failure at a scale house into a five-minute job instead of a delay.
Before you order
- Measure the cutout or the grommet bore, never the lens
- Match the colour that came out, or work from the placement rule
- Replace the grommet with the lamp — hardened rubber is why sealed LEDs flood
- Check how many wires the circuit supplies before buying a stop-turn-tail
- Buy spares: they age as a set, so the first failure predicts the next
- Read 49 CFR 393.11 for the authoritative text — this is an overview, not legal advice
