What You're Actually Buying
This is a wheel end output seal, not the whole hub assembly. It rides in the axle housing where the axle shaft comes through, sealing gear lube on one side and keeping road dirt and water out on the other. On an RT-34-145 rear, that seal takes a beating from heat cycling and constant rotation, so it's a normal wear item on any truck with real miles.
Volvo spec'd Meritor axles across a lot of their day cab and sleeper lineups, so this seal shows up whether you're running a VNL, VHD, or older VN-series truck. Application isn't really about the truck badge though - it's about which axle carrier is bolted underneath.
Comes 4 to a pack because if you're pulling one output seal for a leak, the other three are usually not far behind on time and mileage. Cheaper to do them together than pay labor twice.
How the Cross Numbers Line Up
A1-1205Y2729 cross-references to Stemco 72905 and the aftermarket numbers 30008 and 100495. These aren't coincidence - Meritor's seal spec for the RT-34-145 output bore has stayed consistent for decades, so multiple seal manufacturers built to that same bore diameter, shaft diameter, and lip configuration.
Where guys get burned is assuming any Meritor-badge seal number means it fits every RT-series axle. It doesn't. Bore size and shaft diameter change across the RT-34, RT-40, and RT-46 families, and even within the -145 designation there were running changes over the years. A seal that's a hair off on ID or OD will still go in with a little persuasion and then leak in six months.
Rule of thumb: pull the old seal and read the number off it, or better yet get the axle tag data or full VIN and check the Meritor parts lookup before you order. If the old seal's numbers matches or lines up with what's in the cross-reference table, you're good.

Frequently asked questions
Does A1-1205Y2729 fit my 2015 Volvo VNL with a Meritor rear?
Probably, if it's actually running an RT-34-145 axle - that's the common spec on a lot of VNLs from that era, but Volvo did offer other axle options depending on spec. Check the axle tag on the carrier housing or run the VIN before you order, cheaper than guessing.
Is this the same as Stemco 72905?
Same physical seal, different label - Stemco 72905 crosses directly to A1-1205Y2729 for the RT-34-145 application. Confirm by comparing the old seal's numbers or bore/shaft dimensions if you don't have a number to go off of.
Why does this come in a 4-pack instead of single seals?
Most guys doing a tandem rear end up needing seals on both axles, both sides. Buying the 4-pack usually works out cheaper than ordering singles twice, and if you've got a leak on one you're probably not far off on the others anyway.
