Two ways the same chamber is held together, and it matters more than you'd think when you're ordering and when you're mounting. A quick, honest rundown.
Two builds, same job
The chamber's job doesn't change, but the way the housing is assembled does. A clamp-type chamber holds the two halves together with a steel clamp band (the ring you see around the middle). A bolt-together chamber joins them with bolts around the perimeter. Both are standard, both do the same braking — the difference is in service and in what bolts up to your bracket.
The clamp-type: the common one
Most modern spring brakes on trucks and trailers are clamp-ring style. The clamp band makes the non-pressure (spring) side a sealed, non-serviceable unit — which is exactly what you want on a spring brake you're never supposed to open anyway. When it fails, you replace the assembly. Clean and simple.
Bolt-together: know before you order
Bolt-together chambers show up on certain applications and older equipment. The practical point for ordering is that a clamp-type and a bolt-together aren't visually interchangeable at the bracket, and the clamp band vs bolt flange changes the profile. So this is one more thing to match to what came off — not because one is better, but because they mount and seal differently.
What actually matters when you buy
- Match the type and stroke first — that's the braking spec.
- Match the build (clamp vs bolt-together) so it seats on your bracket and the band/flange clears.
- Confirm the mounting stud pattern and pushrod length are the same.
- For any spring brake, remember it's a sealed replace-only unit regardless of how the halves are joined.
