What You're Looking At
This is the right-hand hood lock assembly for Volvo VN, VNL, and VHD models, covers roughly 2004 through current 2024 builds since Volvo didn't change the hood latch design much over those years. It's the mechanical latch that bolts to the hood or cowl structure and hooks onto the striker to hold the hood shut when you're rolling down the highway at 65 with a headwind.
Two numbers show up on this one - 20565618 and 20565619 - because Volvo runs a left and right pair, mirror image of each other. Make sure you're ordering the RH (passenger side, right side) unit and not grabbing the driver's side by mistake. Easy way to tell: stand in front of the truck looking at the hood, right side is passenger side in the US.
If your hood is sagging on one corner, won't latch flush, or the striker's chewed up from years of slamming, it's usually this piece wearing out, not the hood itself.
Why These Numbers Cross
The 315-5223 and PAI 803897 numbers you see on the cross-reference table are aftermarket manufacturers building to the same mounting pattern, hook geometry, and spring tension as the Volvo 20565618. Newstar's S-20832 is the same deal - different label, same physical part designed to bolt into the identical hole pattern on the hood latch bracket.
Volvo also reused this design across multiple part number releases as they updated their parts catalog - 20356094 and 20415174 are earlier or superseding numbers for the same physical latch. Volvo OE alt 3187264 shows up in some older VN model parts books too.
Where guys get burned is assuming every hood latch on a Volvo is interchangeable. VN, VNL, and VHD share this design, but always match the number stamped or cast on your old latch, or better yet, pull your VIN and check it against the Volvo parts lookup before you order. A latch that looks right but has a different arm length or spring rate won't hold the hood tight, and that's not something you want to find out at 70 mph.

Frequently asked questions
Does 20565618 fit my 2015 VNL 670?
Likely yes, this latch design covers VNL models from 2004 up through current production, but confirm by checking the number stamped on your existing latch or running your VIN through the Volvo parts lookup before ordering. Volvo made minor design changes over the years and you want your specific truck's number to match.
Is this the same as the PAI 803897?
They're built to the same fit and function - PAI 803897 crosses to this Volvo 20565618 assembly. It's an aftermarket part, not a Volvo-branded piece, but it mounts in the same holes and latches the same way. Compare your old part's number if you've got it handy just to be safe.
How do I know if I need the RH or LH side?
Stand facing the front of the truck - passenger side is right-hand (RH), driver's side is left-hand (LH). This listing, 20565618, is the RH side. If your hood latch trouble is on the driver's side, you'll want 20565619 or the equivalent LH number instead.
