Brakes Dragging and Running Hot? Your Air Brake Chamber Might Be the Reason

What dragging feels like

A dragging brake doesn't fully let go when you come off the pedal. The signs are a truck that feels down on power or pulls to one side, a wheel-end that's noticeably hotter than its mates at a stop, a smell of hot brake, and fuel economy that quietly gets worse. Left alone, a dragging brake can overheat the drum and lining badly enough to start a wheel fire — this is a safety issue, not just a wear one.

Where the chamber comes in

• A spring brake that isn't fully releasing — a weak, corroded, or partially seized spring keeps tension on the pushrod.
• A seized or sticking pushrod that doesn't retract cleanly when air releases.
• Over-adjustment from the wrong chamber stroke fitted in a past repair, so the geometry holds the brake close.
• A chamber that's the wrong type for the slack adjuster, throwing the whole application off.

It's not always the chamber — check the whole corner

Honest troubleshooting: a dragging brake can also be a seized slack adjuster, a frozen S-cam, a bad brake line holding pressure, or dragging isn't-releasing hardware. So don't just throw a chamber at it. But when the pushrod isn't retracting and the chamber's spring is suspect, the chamber is squarely in the frame — and if it's an older corroded unit, it's the likely one.

Don't drive on it

A dragging brake gets hotter the farther you go, and heat feeds the problem. If a wheel-end is smoking or too hot to stand near, that's a stop-now situation. Fix the cause before the drum, the lining, or the seal cooks — or worse.

The fix

When the chamber's the cause, replace it as a complete unit, match the type and stroke on the old can, do the pair, and set the stroke adjustment after.
