This is a trailer suspension shock absorber, not a truck cab or steer axle shock. It's built for Hendrickson-style air ride trailer suspensions, the kind you'll find on dry vans, reefers, and flatbeds running Hendrickson HAS or similar trailing arm setups.
The 23650 number and its cousins — A85052, M65510, 65510, HDRS23650, M85052, S-23650 — all trace back to the same shock design used across a bunch of trailer builds from the late 90s through current production. Different suppliers stamped different part numbers on essentially the same shock over the years, which is why you see so many crosses.
Mounting is eyelet-to-eyelet, standard bushing style. No coilover, no air spring integration — just the shock doing its job damping the trailing arm movement.
Reading the Cross-Reference
The numbers cross because they share the same eye-to-eye length, bushing bore size, and stroke travel — that's what actually matters on a trailer shock, not the brand stamped on the tag. Hendrickson's own parts (M85000, A23650, F247923, etc.) came off the same tooling as the aftermarket versions before the numbers diverged over time.
Where you can get burned: some trailers have slightly different eye lengths depending on ride height package or axle spacing, even on the same suspension family. A 1/2 inch difference in mounting length won't be obvious just looking at it, but it'll throw your ride height off or make the shock bind at full droop.
Rule of thumb — pull the old shock, measure eye-to-eye and check the bushing ID, then match that against the number stamped on it if you can still read it. If the tag's gone (happens a lot with road grime and rust), give us the trailer VIN and suspension model and we'll run it down.
