What The 5-280X Is
The 5-280X is a four-cap cross-and-bearing universal joint sized at 49.2mm cap diameter by 154.9mm across the bearing faces. Those two dimensions are what define the joint. Cap diameter sets the yoke bore it drops into, and the overall span sets the width between the yoke ears. Both have to match or the joint will not seat.
This is a driveline joint, so it lives between the transmission output and the carrier or axle input. It carries full torque and reverses load every time the driver gets on and off the throttle. Lube reaches the bearings through the cross and out to the caps, which is why grease interval and grease type matter more here than on most chassis points.
Our version is an aftermarket, premium quality direct replacement. The other brand numbers below are listed for identification only — we are not affiliated with or authorised by any of those manufacturers.
Why These Numbers Cross
M280X, 25280X, CP280X, 5-0280, S-2627, DS5280X and 114-517 all describe a joint built to the same two controlling dimensions: 49.2mm caps on a 154.9mm span. Different suppliers carry different prefixes and internal series codes, but the cross, the cap outside diameter and the bearing face spacing are common. That is why they land on one line in an interchange table.
The 121762R91, 121762R92 and 21762R92 numbers are older-style long-format part numbers from the same interchange group. The 21762R92 and 121762R92 differ only by a leading digit in how the number was recorded over the years, which is why both show up on lists for the same joint.
Crossing on a number is a starting point, not a guarantee. Series families get revised, and a yoke can be machined for a snap-ring groove in a different location. Confirm by VIN or by reading the number off the joint or kit box you pulled.
Check Before You Order
Measure the old joint. Caliper the cap outside diameter and then measure across two opposite bearing faces with the caps seated. If you get 49.2mm and 154.9mm, you are in the right family. If either reading is off, you are looking at a different joint regardless of what the old box says.
Then check the retention style. Note whether the caps are held by external snap rings, internal clips, or U-bolt and strap at the yoke. Also confirm whether the cross has a grease fitting and where it sits, because a zerk in the wrong position can foul the yoke or the tube at full articulation.
5-280X Cross-Reference & Interchange Numbers
These manufacturer and aftermarket numbers commonly cross-reference to 5-280X. Use them to identify the part — then confirm the exact fit by VIN or the number stamped on your old unit before you order. An interchange is a starting point, not a fitment guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my U-joint is actually bad or if it's the carrier bearing?
Grab the driveshaft at the joint and twist against the yoke by hand. Any felt or heard click is lash in the cross and the joint is done. A carrier bearing shows up as vertical play and a dry, cracked rubber isolator. Also pull the caps and look for brinelled tracks or rust-coloured powder, which means the needles have been running dry.
Is 121762R92 the same joint as 21762R92?
They appear on the same interchange line for this joint and differ by a leading digit in how the number was recorded. Treat them as the same family, but verify by measurement rather than by the number alone. Caliper the cap diameter and the bearing face span on the old joint before ordering.
Will the 5-280X drop straight into my yoke?
We can't promise fitment from a cross-reference. The 49.2 x 154.9mm dimensions have to match your yoke bore and ear spacing, and the retention method has to match too. Confirm by VIN or by the number stamped on the joint or kit you removed.
