SPL-250X

SPL-250X Cross-Reference — Universal Joint 60x163mm

SPL-250X is a 60x163mm heavy-duty universal joint for Class 8 driveline service, and most people land on this number after pulling a worn u-joint off a main shaft and reading the stamp on the old cross or the box it came in.

What The Number Covers

SPL-250X is a full-round, non-greaseable style heavy-duty cross and bearing kit measured at 60mm bearing cap diameter by 163mm across the cap faces. Those two dimensions are what actually define the joint. Everything else — snap ring location, cap retention style, bearing construction — is secondary, but it still has to match what came out of your yoke.

This size sits in the heavy spicer-pattern range used on line-haul tractor driveshafts, interaxle shafts, and some heavy vocational applications. It is a bearing-plate or full-round design depending on the yoke it mates to, so the yoke in your truck decides which retention style you need, not the cross dimension alone.

Measure before you order. Caliper the old bearing cap outside diameter and the overall length from cap face to cap face with the caps seated. If you get 60mm and 163mm, you are in the right family. If either number is off by more than a couple of millimetres, you are looking at a different joint entirely.

Why These Numbers Cross

The long interchange list under this part exists because u-joints get rebranded constantly. Driveline builders, bearing houses, truck OEM parts programs and private-label distributors all buy the same physical cross geometry and stamp their own prefix on it. SPL250, SPL250-3X, SPL250-LX, SPL250SF3X and SP250-3X are all the same 60x163mm base with suffixes indicating kit contents or retention hardware.

You also see house-code numbers layered on top. 8235US250X, 25SPL250-3X, 2104SPL250X, AM752SPL250X and 752.SPL250X are distributor catalogue numbers built around the core SPL250 string. Others — 6-1250, NEP6-1250, NP6-1250, 6978, 69780, EM69780, JUJ-6978, WAE359, S-E359, NSSE359 and 415074 — come from separate numbering systems but land on the same dimensional spec.

Numbers like 3947698, 3902073, 2500680C, 2500680C91 and 85126391 are truck-manufacturer service numbers. They are listed here for identification only. PartStop is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or authorised by any of those manufacturers, and listing their numbers does not imply any relationship.

How These Joints Fail

The usual failure is needle bearing breakdown. The rollers brinell into the trunnion, the cap fills with metal paste, and you get driveline vibration that shows up above 45 mph and gets worse under load. Grab the shaft at the joint and try to rock it. Any perceptible play at the cross means replace it now, not next PM.

Second failure mode is a spun or walked cap. Check the yoke ears for fretting and the snap ring grooves for wear before you press a new cross in. A new joint in a worn yoke will beat itself apart. If the ears are elongated or the strap bolt holes are wallowed, the yoke goes too.

SPL-250X Cross-Reference & Interchange Numbers

These manufacturer and aftermarket numbers commonly cross-reference to SPL-250X. Use them to identify the part — then confirm the exact fit by VIN or the number stamped on your old unit before you order. An interchange is a starting point, not a fitment guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Is SPL-250X the same as SPL250-3X?

They share the same 60x163mm cross dimensions and are listed as interchangeable here. Suffix differences usually indicate kit contents or cap retention hardware rather than a different cross. Confirm the retention style on the joint you pull out before you order, since the yoke dictates that, not the cross size.

How do I confirm this fits my truck?

Cross-reference is a starting point, not a fitment promise. Verify by VIN through the driveline spec, or read the number stamped on the old joint or its box. The safest check is to caliper the old bearing caps for 60mm diameter and 163mm overall length across the caps.

Can I replace one u-joint on a shaft or should I do both?

If one joint is worn, the other has the same mileage and heat history on it. Most shops replace both ends and the centre bearing assembly on the same shaft to avoid a second teardown. At minimum, inspect the opposite joint for play and cap movement while the shaft is out.
