What This Starter Does
The 39MT is a planetary gear reduction starter built for heavy-duty diesel cranking. The gear train multiplies torque so a 12V system can turn over a 12.8 to 15.6 litre engine against high compression. On DD13, DD15 and DD16 applications it mounts to the flywheel housing and engages the ring gear through a solenoid-shifted pinion.
61008898 is the aftermarket replacement unit. It is a direct replacement for the listed numbers, supplied as a complete starter with solenoid fitted. Mounting flange, pinion tooth count, nose length and terminal layout all have to match what came off the engine, so compare the old unit side by side before the new one goes on.
Common failure modes are a burnt solenoid contact set, worn brushes, a dragging or shorted armature, and a chewed pinion from repeated grinding engagement. A starter that cranks fine cold and quits hot usually has heat-soaked windings or marginal cable resistance, not a bad solenoid.
Why These Numbers Cross
61008898 shares its core design with 61000704, 61002714 and 61011316. These sit in the same supplier family and differ by production run, labelling, or minor hardware detail rather than by cranking spec or mounting pattern. If your old unit carries one of those, this starter is built to the same footprint.
The remaining numbers come from other catalogue systems describing the same physical starter. 8201004, 34010N, 34010 and 35112 are distributor and remanufacturer listings. 282-0114, FLA579, M009TA0579ZX, 9TA0579, MIB9TA0579 and M110R2613SE trace back to original equipment and unit-manufacturer numbering for the same 39MT assembly.
Those numbers are listed for identification only. PartStop is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or authorised by any original equipment manufacturer. A cross-reference is a starting point — confirm fit by VIN or by reading the number stamped or tagged on the starter you are replacing.
Check Before You Order
Pull the old starter and read the tag. Nose housing numbers and solenoid numbers are often different from the complete unit number, so record all of them. Count the pinion teeth and measure the mounting bolt spacing. Note whether the solenoid terminals point up, down, or outboard, because clearance around the frame rail and exhaust is tight.
Before condemning the starter, load test the batteries and do a voltage drop test on the positive cable, ground strap and the engine-to-frame ground. A drop over about half a volt on either side will make a healthy starter crank like a dead one. Clean and torque every connection at the starter stud.
61008898 Cross-Reference & Interchange Numbers
These manufacturer and aftermarket numbers commonly cross-reference to 61008898. Use them to identify the part — then confirm the exact fit by VIN or the number stamped on your old unit before you order. An interchange is a starting point, not a fitment guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
Will 61008898 fit my DD15 without modification?
It is built as a direct replacement for the listed numbers on DD13, DD15 and DD16 applications. Fitment is not promised from a catalogue lookup alone. Confirm by VIN or by matching the number on the starter you pulled off, and check mounting bolt spacing, nose length and terminal orientation against the old unit.
My truck clicks once and nothing happens. Is the starter bad?
Maybe, but test first. One click usually means the solenoid pulled in but the contacts could not carry cranking current, which can be burnt solenoid contacts or a bad battery or cable. Load test the batteries and run voltage drop tests on both the positive feed and the ground before replacing the starter.
Does this come with the solenoid attached?
Yes, it ships as a complete starter with the solenoid fitted. You do not need to swap your old solenoid over. Transfer only the cable terminals and any heat shield or bracket that was on the original, and torque the stud nuts to spec so the connections do not heat up.
